Morning broke over the Tasman Peninsula and we rose slowly. Today’s only solid plan was that we needed to head north, and we had decided to do so by going what looked to be the scenic route. Bags packed once more, we drove away from this history rich area, vowing to return on the main trip to hit up all the other sites we hadn’t managed to fit in. Typing the address of our accommodation into the SATNAV we were soon on our way, passing through the edge of Hobart and onto the main freeway. It wasn’t long before the scenery changed from suburbia to regional emptiness, not boring as such, but largely decorated with little more than sparse paddocks and the occasional cow. After a while, we turned off onto the A5 which seemed, from Google maps at least, to offer more in the way of scenery.

Little changed in the first hour or so, our surroundings eventually changing from sweeping farmland to forest as we neared The Steppes. Spotting the first tourist sign of the journey we decided to stop and check out whatever ‘The Steppes Sculptures’ were. Parking in the potholed and puddle filled area just off the road, we walked down the short track until we reached a circle of twelve strategically placed large stones, each with a bronze sculpture attached to its inner facing side.
