When I woke up, it was with a heavy heart. Not only because the scratch I’d had in my throat the previous day had morphed into the beginnings of another bout of bronchitis, but because I would have to say goodbye to my friend. Now, anyone who knows me well will tell you that saying goodbye is most certainly not my strong suit. In fact, I have no memory of leaving people I care about without shedding a tear. As such, it was with cloudy eyes and many hugs that I bid farewell to a friend who has graced my life with her presence for more than a third of it. She had, rather strategically, not told her daughter we were leaving as she took her off to day-care, but it was sure to be the trigger for a meltdown when she got home. There was nothing else for it, though, and so I simply tucked a little money into her moneybox and told my friend to give her a big hug for me.

The time had come to continue our journey north towards the Central Coast. It was to be a brief, one-night stay, and we hadn’t overloaded our schedule for the day in order to hopefully curb any illness-based burn out. After a short drive, we arrived at the carpark beside Station Beach at the base of the steep ascent up Barrenjoey Headland.
