For the first day since we’d arrived on the Bellarine Peninsula, we awoke to a day of calm winds. By calm I, of course, mean comparative to the days previous, not comparative to non-coastal regions where the amount of wind we were stepping out into would still at the very least qualify as ‘a bit breezy’. Still, with the sun providing mild climes and the clouds in the distance only appearing moderately ominous, we readied ourselves for another day of exploring the great outdoors.
First up, after a spectacularly short drive, we arrived in St Leonards for our main activity for the day: the Edwards Point hike out to Two Bays Lookout. Located, much to nobody’s surprise, on a point of land jutting into the sea, this little slice of national park offers refuge to an array of endangers plants and animals who thrive in the saltmarshes. Parking haphazardly on the grass, we gathered our backpack and headed off along the trail. It may not have been the most riveting of walks, there were no towering mountains, hidden caves, or otherworldly scenery, but the path was flat, the sun was at our back, and we had the trail all to ourselves. As such, it was a perfect start to the day for a pair of weary and highly-strung introverts looking to escape reality.
