Another bright morning saw the sun warming the lingering chill off our tent, condensation glistening on the canvas as we woke slowly to my partner’s birthday. When we finally brought ourselves to creep out into the day, it was with much groaning. Our calves had seemingly almost atrophied overnight, seeing us hobbling around until they had managed to stretch out enough for us to stand upright, although any kind of squatting or stair usage was clearly going to be painful for some time yet. Obviously, this wasn’t the ideal start to the day, but we had leisurely plans on the cards which would see us spend the day celebrating in the company of my partner’s brother, sister, and nieces.
With our somewhat sorry selves sorted, we decided there was only one appropriate way to begin the birthday celebrations, and that is, of course, with pastries for breakfast. I don’t care how old you are, if you’re not eating whatever you so feel like on your birthday, I’m afraid you might be doing life wrong. As such, we parked briefly in town, winding through the streets until we reached a nearby bakery and purchased ourselves some sweet treats; my partner opting for a salted caramel éclair, and myself unable to resist the call of a custard-filled doughnut exuding hardcore chimney cake vibes.
