A new day dawned, and we were up and at ’em as fast as we were inspired to be, in that we didn’t leave until about ten. Today we would be exploring the isolated north west corner of Kangaroo Island, and so we packed ourselves some lunch and headed off. The drive was long, and almost half of it involved pot-hole dodging down the treacherous dirt road that services the area, our poor little Rav 4 becoming evermore encased in a layer of ochre-coloured dirt sprayed onto it through the medium of muddle splashes.

Eventually, we reached the end, and I gratefully released the hold on my tensed muscles and stepped out into the fresh, late morning breeze. Our first task for the day was a short but rather steep hike down to Harvey’s Return. This concealed little cove used to be the only port of call for delivering supplies to the tight-knit group of families that manned the lighthouse just down the road. As we descended the slick rocks to the hidden bay, I wondered to myself how it had ever been possible for an oxen-pulled dray to ever make it up the embankment. Honestly, it’s a wonder the lighthouse ever received supplies at all.
