The morning came and I realised that I take for granted how warm our sleeping bags are. We might have been staying in a cabin, but I woke far colder than I ever have in the tent. Ironic really. Still, despite the frosty temperatures outside, there were adventures to be had. Thus, we rugged up in as many layers as it took to fight off the chill, and joined my mum and her best friend’s family for the yearly day of group adventure that the Weekend Away affords us.

Originally, we had planned to take a ride on the local heritage paddle steamer. However, as seemed to be the way of things far to often on these annual meetups, we found that they were not running due to winter maintenance. Our second option had been to check out a local wood sculptor’s workshop, but our research the previous night had show that to be closed as well. So, what do you do in a new town when you don’t know what to do? You go to the visitor centre, of course.

A little poking around the brochure stand and Googling driving distances, and we decided on trying something unlikely to be closed for the winter: nature. As we waited for those in the group who required caffeine-based refreshment from the café, we took a brief look at the local products on sale, before sauntering around the somewhat abstract art…
