Our last day in Rome saw us venturing beyond the city to the nearby town of Tivoli, but given that the previous day had involved an early start, we took a more leisurely approach to the morning, waking slowly, having breakfast, and not stepping out into the big, wide world until after 10am. Heading to the nearby train station, we took a short trip to a different station on the other side of Rome, in order to swap over to another line which would deliver us to our destination. Reaching other platform though, we soon discovered our train was delayed by forty minutes. Seriously Italy, you need to sort out your public transport system, it’s a veritable disaster.
All was not lost though, and by a stroke of luck, we managed to hear a shout from a nearby Statesider couple and noticed that a regional train leaving on schedule from a different platform would alternatively deliver us to Tivoli, albeit a bit slower than our intended route. Still, with the current delay it would get us there sooner, and thus we hustled over and managed to board in time. The journey was an interesting mix of gorgeous mountainous landscape views and run-down suburbs where the tracks were littered with a disturbing amount of trash.
