It is a truth known to all who have travelled in a tent for any amount of time, that putting in all the effort of setting it up seems like such a waste when you are only staying in a place for a singular night. Still, we had to sleep somewhere, and the tent was far more comfortable than attempting sleep in the car.

As such, the sun rose, and we were up early for yet another pack down. If nothing else, I was powered by the promise of ice-cream and as we trundled off with our heavily-laden car, we stopped by the local ice-creamery one last time. Once again, we were faced with a difficult decision, and after much deliberation I walked away with a scoop of Biscoff and a scoop of passionfruit. Fruit and biscuits mixed with dairy and eggs…that counts as a balanced breakfast, right?

Buzzing from the early morning sugar hit, we made a beeline for our first attraction for the day: Budderoo National Park, or more specifically, Carrington Falls. We reached the trailhead without any trouble, and we were soon on our way around the half-kilometre circuit. As we came up on the first lookout, we were met with the truly spectacular view of the falls. Tumbling off the cliff and freefalling some ninety metres to the deep valley below, Carrington is a wonderous sight to behold.

Not only was the view of the main attraction breathtaking, but so was the view along the valley itself. The bright morning sun shone in from the east, and in doing so cast a heavy shadow over the base of the chasm. As I admired the juxtaposition of light and dark, my mind couldn’t help but repeat the bible phrase I had heard far too many times in horror movies (because, yes, that is the only reason I know a single line of that book). ‘Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil.’
