It had been a restless night, not only because we had been irritated by the raucous party of people we’d had to share the camp kitchen with before heading to bed, but because across the river sat another rowdy group of twenty-somethings listening to music and drinking until the wee hours. Coupled with the mixed wake up call of screaming children, cockatoos, and koalas alike, we weren’t exactly the happiest campers. Still, the day beckoned us outside, and having learnt to disregard the weather warnings for rain which never seemed to come to fruition, we sorted ourselves into something resembling functional adults and headed out.
As with the previous two days, our plans involved hiking a couple of the many trails tucked in the Otway National Park surrounding Lorne. Feeling overly adventurous in the planning stage of our trip, we had tentatively signed ourselves up for a full day of it. Of course, our past selves were far more optimistic than us, and a few track closures meant that our original plan was not entirely possible. Still, the 7.2km Three Falls Track loop was unaffected by the whims of mother nature, and so we decided to do the main part of that and decide whether to add on an extra waterfall walk when we reached the Sheoak Picnic Area.
