It was with great reluctance that we bid farewell to our Airbnb in Canberra, but there were places to go and that would involve getting back on the road and back in out tent. As such, we set out, but we were not headed somewhere new. Instead, the first leg had come full circle and we were headed back to Merimbula. Not because we had unfinished sightseeing there, but because we were needed to attend the sprinkling of my partner’s mother’s ashes.
As was the way in these Covid times, my partner’s brother-in-law had come down with the virus, and so the original plans were up in the air. Still, with the camping spot already booked, we’d decided to stay in the hopes he’d come good and no one else would catch it in the meantime. That, and my partner’s birthday was the next day, and he wanted to spend it with his family.
The drive went smoothly enough as we retraced the road we’d taken back to my mum’s almost a year prior. It was about an hour in when we needed a rest stop, and so we pulled into the carpark of the McDonalds in Cooma and grabbed a couple of thickshakes so that we might use their bathroom.
