Awaking to an uncharacteristically sunny day, albeit still cloud dappled and cold, we were up and out the door fairly quickly. Breakfast had been put off for the sheer fact our trip had lined up our days so that we would get to enjoy Hobart on a Saturday, and anyone who has ever been here will tell you there is one must visit destination if you find yourself in that scenario, the Salamanca Market. This open air farmers market has been running along Salamanca Place for almost fifty years, and offers fresh produce, artisan food and drinks, and a swathe of locally made handicrafts to residents and visitors alike.
Walking down the hill and across town, we soon joined the long queue to get in. Like everything else at the moment, the market is beholden to COVID restrictions, and as such can only allow 1500 people into the market at any one time, all of whom must be checked in via QR code or manually and are organised using a one in one out system. There were numerous safety officers around to remind everyone to stay 1.5 metres apart in the line, but of course that in no way worked, both because everyone just ignored them, and also because if everyone actually adhered to that rule the line would have gone halfway across the city.
