As I dragged myself out of bed on this unassuming Sunday, I was already exhausted. Why, I hear you ask. Because I had been terrorised by the most annoying and deadly animal in the world for the entire night, the mosquito. Look I don’t know where in the house these arseholes were breeding and hiding during the day, but it would seem that mosquito families, much like human families, are bigger in Italy. Not only had I been kept awake by the incessant buzzing, I, much like my partner, arose covered in bites. Great start to the day right. In order to get some of my frustration out I wandered the loft area crushing the blood sucking bastards into the walls, my stolen blood splattering around their bodies like morbid paint flecks. We couldn’t let something so small ruin our big plans though, so after writing a stern email to our host about the problem and our expectation for a solution, we scoffed a little breakfast and went down the street to meet my brother and his travel companion, Leighann, who had arrived the previous evening in order to partake in the day’s adventure.

It had finally arrived, the day we would visit our most anticipated attraction in Sicily, Mount Etna. That’s right, the massive active volcano which seems to have some sort of eruption more years than it doesn’t. As things would turn out, less than a month…
