By the time I stirred on our anniversary, my partner was already up and pottering around in the other room. Rising from bed and wandering myopically to the bathroom to put in my contact lenses, I came out to find that he had written me a letter. Mildly annoyed, only because we had said no presents and I hadn’t done anything for him, I read it with a smile. It is important to note at this point that we don’t give each other presents for any occasion aside from birthdays, so we can save for travelling. He had kept the content light and jovial, knowing all too well that anything too lovey or deep would have resulted in me crying, and no one wants to start the day with red eyes. As I tucked the letter in my bag, I knew today was going to be a good day, just like almost every other day spent with him had been for the past seven years, and even if it wasn’t, we would weather the storm together, as always.
Our plans for the morning were somewhat low key. There was a reason we were staying in Burnie, and it wasn’t because we had some grandiose attraction to visit. No, we were in this little western Tasmanian town because we had a little research to do for the second book of our fantasy series.
