Up and ready for another adventure filled day, we eagerly stepped out the door only to come face to face with a major speed bump to achieving our plans, a flat tyre. It would seem that in our endeavour to find the cart ruts the previous evening, winding through the under-construction roads, we had managed to get something lodged in the tyre, not obvious to the eye, but troublesome enough that it had lost all of its air overnight. Frantically…

Although against my brain’s deepest desires, we awoke early once again. An action-packed day lay before us, with not one, not two, but three archaeological sights on the agenda. As such we mechanically went through our morning routine until we were in a suitable state to leave the house. Jumping in the car we headed south in search of adventure.

As I’ve explained, the history of Malta spans millennia, and that’s just human inhabitation. Today we were starting our day…

Our day was to contain a mix of something old and something new, but we were to be working somewhat chronologically backwards. Eager to begin another jam packed adventure, we fixed a quick breakfast and hopped in the car. One of the major benefits of Malta’s condensed size is that getting to any particular place never takes all that long; even to pass from one end of the island to the other across its widest part takes under an hour…

A warm November sun rose over Malta, and we rose with it, eager to begin our day of education and exploration in Malta’s capital, Valletta. Breakfasted and ready to rumble, we stepped outside, bypassing the car, and wandering to the nearest main street to catch a bus. Like most old European cities, parking is basically a non-option here, and thus we elected to entrust our delivery to the public transport gods. Luckily, Malta seems to have different gods to Italy…

I would be lying if I said I had woken from a good sleep, but if nothing else the citronella candles and liberal application of mosquito spray had meant we all rose with considerably less bites than the previous night. That being said, I don’t think a single one of us would be sad to see the back of this apartment. …

As I dragged myself out of bed on this unassuming Sunday, I was already exhausted. Why, I hear you ask. Because I had been terrorised by the most annoying and deadly animal in the world for the entire night, the mosquito. Look I don’t know where in the house these arseholes were breeding and hiding during the day, but it would seem that mosquito families, much like human families, are bigger in Italy. Not only had I been kept awake…

Feeling mildly better upon waking, but still far below a hundred percent, I dragged myself out of bed, pulled myself together, and packed my things into the car beside the other luggage. …

The European year may have been on the cusp of winter, but for the third day we rose to clear skies and warm morning sun lighting our way to adventure. Feeling somehow worse than the previous day, but fairly confident that this would be the ‘worse before it gets better’ day of my cold, we packed our things into the car and made the short drive up the hill to explore the town of Agrigento.

Despite now residing within the…

As I awoke on the four hundred and forty-ninth day of our trip, I did so in a state I had, until then, managed to avoid, and one I had dreaded; I awoke with a cold. It would seem that, although my mother had finally shaken the one which had followed her from Rome to Naples, I had managed to fall victim to it in the end. …

Day followed night, as it was wont to do, and we indulged in a sleep in, as much as you can when your check out time is 10am. Stepping outside we took a long moment to admire the view which the waning light had robbed us of the previous day. Looking out, it was easy to see why so many people elect the Amalfi coast as their holiday destination of choice. I mean why choose the beach or…
